Connect Instagram and understand recipe imports

Choose future or recent posts, review imported drafts, and troubleshoot an empty Instagram import.

Updated October 1, 2026

Connected Instagram but no recipes appeared? The default is to import future posts only. Connecting does not automatically bring in your existing recipe archive.

Before connecting

You need a public Instagram Creator or Business account. A personal account is not eligible, and a Facebook Page is not required. Open Settings → Instagram as the owner of a claimed publication. New pay-to-publish publications can use management tools before subscribing; public access still requires the plan. Publications on legacy Free/Pro terms keep their feature entitlements, so an upgrade may be required there.

If connection is not available, you can paste a written recipe or caption and keep working. Your Instagram profile link in Links is separate from an authorized connection.

Choose which posts to check

These steps describe a new connection. If Crumb already imports posts for you, Settings shows Switch your existing recipe updates instead. Connecting preserves your draft or automatic publishing preference and email settings, and catches up posts from your existing import period.

If your publication already has recipes from Instagram, Settings shows Your existing recipes stay as they are, and checking your 25 most recent posts is selected by default. Recipes already on your publication are never imported twice, including ones you removed.

  1. Open Settings → Instagram and review the connection information.
  2. Leave Also import recipes from my 25 most recent posts unchecked to start with future posts. Select it if you also want Crumb to check those recent posts for recipes.
  3. Choose Connect Instagram and authorize the correct professional account through Instagram. Crumb does not receive your password.
  4. Return to Crumb. Check the connection status and the imported recipe history.
  5. Open a recipe from Recipes, review it, and preview the saved draft before publishing.

The recent-post option checks up to 25 posts, not 25 guaranteed recipes. A caption needs enough ingredients and instructions to make a recipe. A photo, video, or caption that says “recipe in bio” may not provide enough text. A post that is already a recipe on your publication, or one you removed, is skipped.

If no recipes appear

  • Future posts only: publish a new Instagram post with a complete recipe caption, or paste an existing recipe into Crumb now.
  • Recent posts selected: check whether those captions actually contain the recipe. Posts without the full text may be skipped.
  • Reconnect required or paused: use the reconnect control and review the permissions on Instagram.
  • Waiting for a check: look at Last checked and the import history in Settings. Imports run in the background. If a complete caption is still missing after a check, contact Crumb with the post link and approximate time.

You can always add the recipe yourself rather than waiting for sync. Avoid pasting it again if a draft for that recipe is already in your recipe list.

Decide how future recipes are published

For a new setup, the default is Save as drafts. This gives you time to check the quantities, instructions, timings, and images. Publishing a draft is a separate action.

For a public publication, Publish new Instagram recipes automatically can publish complete recipes as public and free. Review the separate email setting too: automatic publishing does not always mean an email announcement is sent. You can return to draft-first importing while you get comfortable with the results.

Optional comment recipe links

Where enabled for your publication, Comment recipe links can send a private reply when someone comments the configured keyword on a recipe post. This requires comment access and a matching published, public, free recipe on a public publication. You can review and publish the recipe manually before inviting comments; automatic publishing is optional. Comments received while a recipe is still a draft do not receive a recipe link. It is not a general-purpose inbox or a replacement for checking an import.

If Settings asks you to reconnect with comment access, complete that authorization first. Review the keyword and message, including the recipe-link placeholder, before enabling replies.

Disconnecting

Choose Disconnect in Instagram settings to stop the connection. Existing recipe drafts are kept. You can continue editing and publishing them in Crumb.
